2026 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 eTorque

Does the Ram 1500 Need Regular or Premium Gas?

Most gasoline-powered Ram 1500 engines can use 87-octane regular unleaded, but some perform best with a higher grade. The 5.7L HEMI commonly calls for 89 octane for optimal performance, while the standard-output Hurricane can benefit from 91 or higher. The high-output Hurricane calls for premium fuel. Check your truck’s model-year owner’s manual before filling up.

At North York Chrysler in Thornhill, we help buyers from North York, Vaughan and Richmond Hill compare the fuel requirements of the Ram 1500 trucks they are considering.

Ram 1500 Fuel Grades by Engine

This table is a starting point for commonly found Ram 1500 gasoline engines. Model year matters: use the owner’s manual for your exact truck to confirm its fuel guidance.

Ram 1500 engine Fuel guidance
3.6L Pentastar V6 Generally 87-octane regular unleaded.
5.7L HEMI V8 87 octane is commonly acceptable; 89 octane is recommended for optimal performance in applicable model years.
3.0L Hurricane standard output 87 octane is acceptable; 91 or higher supports optimal performance under applicable guidance.
3.0L Hurricane high output 91-octane or higher premium under current-model guidance.

Does the Ram 1500 HEMI Need Premium Gas?

The 5.7L HEMI V8 does not generally require 91-octane premium gas. In applicable Ram 1500 owner’s manuals, 87 octane is acceptable and 89-octane mid-grade supports optimal performance. The difference may be more noticeable in hot weather or when the truck is working under a heavy load.

Check the manual for the HEMI truck you own or plan to buy. A fuel recommendation from one model year should not automatically be applied to another.

What Octane Does a Ram 1500 Hurricane Need?

First determine whether the truck has the standard-output or high-output Hurricane.

The standard-output version can use 87-octane regular under current guidance, while 91 or higher allows optimal performance, particularly in hot weather or while towing. The high-output version calls for 91-octane or higher premium.

Both engines are called Hurricane, but they should not be treated as having identical fuel guidance. If you are shopping used, confirm the engine version and model year before choosing a grade.

Is Premium Gas Worth It for the Pentastar V6?

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is generally designed to use 87-octane regular unleaded. Current owner guidance says premium is not required and does not provide a benefit over regular gas for that engine.

Higher octane is not automatically better for every truck. It matters when the manufacturer specifies or recommends it for the particular powertrain.

Regular, Mid-Grade and Premium: What Do the Numbers Mean?

The number on the pump is its octane rating. At Canadian gas stations, 87 is usually labelled regular, 89 mid-grade, and 91 or higher premium.

Pay attention to whether your manual says a grade is required, recommended for optimal performance, or acceptable. Those terms mean different things. The high-output Hurricane’s premium guidance should not be treated like the HEMI’s distinction between acceptable 87 and optimal 89.

Can a Ram 1500 Use E85 or Diesel?

Do not use E85 unless the specific vehicle is explicitly approved for it. Current Ram 1500 gasoline-engine guidance prohibits E85 and ethanol blends above 15%.

Some older used Ram 1500 trucks were sold with a diesel engine. Identify the engine and fuel type of the individual truck before refuelling. Diesel and gasoline are not interchangeable.

Confirm Your Truck’s Fuel Requirements

Before buying a Ram 1500, compare its engine, recommended fuel grade and Canadian fuel-consumption rating in L/100 km. This is particularly useful if you commute across the GTA or regularly tow on Ontario highways. You can also explore which Ram 1500 trim has the features you actually need to narrow down your options.

Ram 1500 Fuel Questions

Can I put regular gas in a Ram 1500?

Many Ram 1500 gasoline engines can use 87-octane regular, but the high-output Hurricane calls for premium. Confirm your engine and check its model-year owner’s manual before refuelling.

Is 89 octane premium gas?

No. At Canadian pumps, 89 octane is generally called mid-grade. Premium is commonly 91 octane or higher. Follow the octane number in your truck’s fuel guidance rather than the pump label alone.

Will premium gas improve every Ram 1500 engine?

No. The benefit depends on the engine. For example, current Pentastar V6 guidance does not identify a benefit from premium, while higher octane supports optimal performance in the standard-output Hurricane.

Where can I find the correct gas grade for my Ram 1500?

Check the fuel requirements section of the owner’s manual for your truck’s model year and engine. If buying used, first confirm the vehicle’s engine rather than relying only on its trim badge.
