The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 at the Canadian International Autoshow
Posted on January 26, 2020
It can't have escaped your notice that pickup trucks have undergone something of a transformation in recent years. Where pickups were once largely the preserve of the farm, construction site and commercial operators, they're now just as likely to be owned by people using them for the daily commute or for general family duties. The Ram 1500 has long been one of the standard-bearers of the full-size light-duty segment of the pickup market, but these Ram trucks have been around in its current for quite some time now. That's why an all-new 2019 Ram 1500 being launched is a seriously big deal and why it's been one of the biggest draws at this year's Canadian International Auto Show.
Exterior styling
The Ram has been one of the most easily distinguishable designs in the market for a while now, and that's still the case as this all-new 2019 Ram 1500 has a more upscale and innovative design. It utilizes the very highest quality materials and includes a decent helping of class-exclusive technology, with what the automaker calls an "unbreakable interlocking" theme for striking looks and enhanced aerodynamics. Although the new model will be sold alongside the current one for a while, you're not likely to confuse them. The updated styling includes a new grille that sheds the characteristic crosshairs that are such a feature of older versions, and an all-new full LED Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which is made up of twin bi-functional projector headlamps, fog lamps and tail lamps. This is still very much a Ram 1500 at first glance, but it's also quite obviously been brought right up-to-date.
Powertrains
Whether you're using it for work, family duty, or as a wilderness adventure vehicle, a truck has to have the right amount of power under the hood to get the job done. But as the amount of applications trucks are used for these days increases, so does the versatility they have to offer. More power and more fuel-efficiency is what most buyers want, and it seems these two competing attributes no longer have to be mutually exclusive anymore. Thanks to its new eTorque mild hybrid system now fitted to the second-generation 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6s and the iconic 5.7-litre Hemi V-8s under the hood of the new 1500, gains in fuel efficiency come without any loss of power and performance. In fact, the eTorque system actually adds up to 90 lb.-ft. more torque to the V-6, and up to as much as 130 lb.-ft. when coupled with the Hemi V-8. eTorque is basically a combination of a belt-drive motor generator and 48-volt battery pack that enables stop/start technology, short-term torque-assist and brake energy regeneration to deliver much improved fuel economy.
Technology
There are huge strides now being made with the features, equipment and technology available with the new Ram 1500. There are now more than 100 safety and security features on the new truck, and the fourth-generation Uconnect infotainment system takes connectivity and in-cabin information to entirely new levels. There's now a class-exclusive, 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen display that features split-screen capability for dual-application operation, a 360-degree Surround View Camera with bird's-eye perspective of vehicle, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capability, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and plenty more besides.
